Ashford & District Table Tennis League: Week 1 (Division 1)

Week one of the new season has now been completed.  This season division one sees three new junior players joining the senior ranks, and all three have sent a message that they are more than capable of competing.

In the pick of the matches Posting A, last seasons winners, took on Little Chart A, last seasons runners up.  From the start Little Chart A faced an up hill struggle turning up with only two players.  However Arthur Bracken, our first junior, push Malcolm Skates to four legs in an attacking encounter with Malcolm finally coming through 7, 9. -8. 7.  However Arthur then took of Roy Coles in more defensive edging past a player 6 times his age in five -7, -5, 9, 8, 8.  Finally Nick Owen proved his status as one of the more consistent players in the division with a straights set victory. Little Charts other player, Mike Holiday, took a more measured approach losing out 3-1 to both Roy Coles and Nick Owen, but squeezing past Malcolm -8, -13, 7, 12, 9 is an encounter dominated by more than a fair slice of lucky nets and edges.  Final result was first blood to Postling in a 7-2 win.

Elsewhere in the league our next junior, Shem Legarde, was in action against against Challock A side of Steve Smith, Cliff Ball, and Roy Baker.  Shems attack could not unlock the defence of Steve Smith, but not many people can, losing out -2, 7, -10, -6.  However that was last defeat tasted by the Iron Room B player overcoming the attacking Cliff Ball in five (albeit just with an 13-11 final leg), and the experienced Roy Baker by 3 sets to 1.  Elsewhere in the team Vince Corbin went unbeaten, and Paul Waumsley narrowly lost out in a fifth leg 11-7 to Steve Smith.  Final result 7-2 to Iron Room B.

Our final, but oldest, Junior was Tom Down playing for Little Chart B up against a Ruckinge A team with only one member of last years’ side still in place.  Tom was made to work for his two wins with 3-2 wins over Jamie Horton and Charlie Richards, but losing out in his final singles encounter 3-2 to our Croatian contingent Hrvoje Crnko 11-9 in the fifth leg.  Last years’ Ladies Singles winner had a luckless night not picked up a set against Jamie or Hrvoje, but made Charlie work for his win in a rather erratic match 11-2, 11-9, 3-11, 9-11, 11-9.  Finally coming across from the Dover League, David Riordan took an impressive 3-0 over Charlie Richards, but then lost out to both Hrvoje & Jamie. Final score 6-3 to Ruckinge A.

In the final fixture of this round Iron Room A took on the division newbies Ruckinge B, with Bispham junior stealing the show.  Johnny Bispham’s spin and attack proving too much for Mike Galvan, and Trevor Heales, before Shaun Small almost upset the form book by taking the match into a fifth leg before going down 12-10 in the final leg. Ruckinge’s Mike Galvan came away with a brace for his side taking wins over the defensive Steve Bispham, and attacking Keith Harris.  In an open finish for the evening no player came away empty handed with Shaun Small taking the win over Keith Harris, but losing out to Steve.  Then Trevor Heales beat Steve Bispham but lost out to Keith. Final Score 5-4 for Iron Room A.
